The Identity of Jesus

Darkness at Crucifixion, DoreEvery world religion has something different to say about Jesus such as that He was simply a prophet of Allah, that He was an enlightened man, that He was a good teacher, while others of a more critical agenda claim He never even existed.
Jesus was the key that initiated the New Covenant with mankind, this was an event and a person pointed to by prophecy even in the Garden of Eden (Gen 2:15).
It is easy to see that His coming is the most important event in history, for by Him there is forgiveness of sins and freedom from sin and death (Act 4:12, Jhn 3:16, Rom 6:23).
Popular media productions such as Discovery Channels “The Lost Tomb of Jesus” or National Geographic’s “The Gospel of Judas”, and the best seller “The DaVinci Code” all aim to discount the Biblical Jesus and everything He stood for. It is as if the popular media has its scopes on Christianity and longs to take it down at any chance it gets.

The Enemies Plan

Once we recognize that Jesus is the only way back to God it makes sense to say that our enemy’s first priority is to get people to not accept Jesus and therefore never restore union God. Or more accurately; Satan’s will is to not have people believe in Jesus to the point of salvation and through Him avoid the flames of hell, this is what Satan does not want. (Jhn 10:10). This may even be through normal Sunday attendance of a church and living the average Christian life without truly having Christ as the Lord of their life (Matthew 7:21-23).

Satan has accomplished this goal through many avenues such as religious pluralism (all religious paths to salvation are equal to Christ, thus Christ is not exclusively needed), through modern thought that claims Jesus never existed or was an amplified cultural myth, and through partial Christianity where the believer is convinced that their belief in Jesus is enough to get them to heaven. However the reality may be that they are not actually saved (mental ascent or religious living: Matthew 7:21-23).

The Most Important Question Ever Asked

Jesus recognized the important of His own identity when asking Peter “Who do men say that I am… who do you say that I am” in Matthew 16:3. Peter answered rightly in saying that Jesus was the Christ and son of God. If someone of any culture, time or religion desires eternal life and access to God and heaven they must ask themselves this question – who is Jesus? And if they acknowledge the truth of His identity than they must walk in that truth and accept Christ as their redeemer and their Lord in order to enter heaven. Other world religions have obvious problems with theology, ancient history, spiritual teachings and so on when compared to the Bible but at the heart of it: the true issue is whether or not they are covered by the blood of Christ.

Some Famous Quotes

“While not exclusive in the wideness of His mercy, Jesus is exclusive in His claim that He is the only solution for our sin problem and the only way to God. And that indeed He is God, Jesus is the central issue that separates me from Hindus, Muslims, Jews, New Age adherents, and the advocates of any other form of religion. His claims are unique”

-Joseph Stowell from The Trouble with Jesus

“Truth is by definition the exclusive and narrow way. Truth has few friends, and fewer lovers, and still fewer children.”

-Mark Driscoll

“One must keep on pointing out that Christianity is a statement which, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important.”

-C.S. Lewis

  1. >>>…Jesus was the key that initiated the New Covenant with mankind…

A side note… the new covenant is only made with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

  2. So gentiles are left out of Christ’s salvation? If one does not have the New Covenant they are unable to enter be purified from their sins aka salvation. I find the exact opposite throughout the Bible. That is actually one of the key features of the New Covenant; that the gentiles are now openly accepted by God and able to enter in to salvation. It was also prophesied in Isaiah and probably other books of the O.T.

Mat 12:18 – “Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.
Mat 12:21 – And in His name Gentiles will trust.”
Luk 2:32 – A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.”
Act 9:15 – But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.
Act 10:45 – And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
Act 11:1 – Now the apostles and brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.
Act 11:18 – When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”
Act 13:47 – “For so the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.'”
Act 28:28 – “Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!”
Rom 3:29 – Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also,
Gal 3:14 – that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Eph 3:6 – that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel,
Eph 3:8 – To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

How do you view these scriptures that show that the gospel came to the Jews AND the Gentiles, that the Holy Spirit (or breathe in your view) is poured out on to Gentiles, and that God worked among the Gentiles in the N.T. times?

  3. Slow down… listen…

I didn’t say that *nothing* pertains to gentiles, only that the new covenant did:

Jeremiah 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

Hebrews 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

  4. Because those scriptures state that the New Covenant will be made with the Jews does not mean it won’t be made also with the Gentiles.
If I tell one of my kids what they are getting for Christmas but not what I am giving their brother, it doesn’t mean that I am not giving anything to their brother just that I chose not to at that time disclose to them what their brother is getting.

We find in the Old Testament passages that talk of the inclusion of the Gentiles so we must conclude that the New Covenant of grace applies to both Jews and Gentiles and that God chose to mention them separate at times and together at times. Since the OT was to the Israelites it was not always necessary to mention the future inclusion of the Gentiles.

I guess you can get technical and say that because the 1st Covenant, the Law was not to or for the Gentiles that the New Covenant is the Gentiles “1st covenant” not 2nd. But to the Jews it’s the 2nd Covenant or New Covenant. If God offers the same things through grace to the Jew now that He does to the Gentile through grace, salvation etc. how are Gentiles not in the same New Covenant as the Jews? The means and effect is the same.
